Dev Log 1 - Ideation Phase!
This is our first devlog post for our game, 'Blank Construct', which is our final project game for college. We have the whole college year to work on it, so we will post all progress updates here!
When we first received the project brief, which was simply to make a full game by the end of the year, we formed our team and got to work thinking up concepts for the game we wanted to make. We spent a few days brainstorming before we had a meeting where we narrowed it down to two concepts and ultimately picked the one that we were going to work with. The first of the final two concepts was a cleaning simulator, which would be centred around music. You would clean and take care of peoples instruments, we really liked this cosy game idea and felt we could have a lot of fun making it but in the end we went with the other of the two, which was a 2.5 side-scrolling 'beat-'em up', with rogue like elements.
Once we had our basic concept nailed down, we worked on storyline, art-style and name ideas for the game. To give a very basic summary of the story; the player character has found themselves in a strange world that they had only heard about in stories, a compound of sorts in the middle of nowhere, simply know as 'The Construct'. The Construct was created and is being ruled over by an evil and crazed scientist, Dr. Blank, who created the place to run tests and experiments on beings from all timelines and dimensions in order to create his very own army to protect him and to help him carry out his evil plans. Our main character has to find Dr. Blank, and stop his plans before it's too late, defeating his experiments along the way. For the games art style we went for a low-poly, pixel art style inspired by games like 'Owlboy' by D-Pad Studios, 'Eastward Game' by PixPil Studio and the 'Rayman' games by Ubisoft. After finalising the game story we came up with it's name; Blank Construct.
With all of this decided, we divided up our jobs/roles, we made our Trello board to help us track our progress and we got to work on the actual game production. One task down, a lot more to go, but we're super excited for this game and we've had a good time with the process so far!
